How to Choose the Right Skilled Trade for Your Career

Considering a career in the skilled trades? Not sure which one will suit you best though? After reading this article from our recruitment agency in Calgary, you'll know how you can narrow things down using the opportunities available to you.

The skilled trades can be a very lucrative career. They can also be extremely stable and offer high employment rates, with the Ontario government tabling a report that says one in five new jobs in 2021 will be in the skilled trades. This is being attributed to Canada's aging workforce and a lack of young skilled workers who are needed to replace them as they retire.

With all these positives going for the skilled trades, choosing a career in one could be your answer to financial freedom. Here's how you can help yourself whittle down your list so you select the right one.

How to Choose the Right Skilled Trade for Your Career

It can be tough picking the right skilled trade to start a career in. Unless you have prior experience with something like carpentry or welding, how are you to know if it's something you'll be good at or enjoy? Luckily there are a few very important resources out there for aspiring skilled tradespeople to help them select which career path they'd like to go down. Let's take a look at some.

Open houses/career fairs

Open houses and career fairs are excellent opportunities for aspiring tradespeople to be introduced to skilled trades they may not have considered or even known about before. While it was rare to see the skilled trades represented at either of these two events not that long ago, that certainly isn't the case today.

With everything going on due to COVID-19, open houses and career fairs have somewhat been put on hold. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is holding a virtual open house in the second half of October for those who are interested in seeing what the school has to offer in terms of programs. The link for registering can be found here

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of skilled trades. No one was ever born with the innate ability to become an electrician, plumber, welder, or carpenter. They all had to learn at some point, and they most likely did so through an apprenticeship.

For those who are in high school, the Alberta government's Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) provides the opportunity for students who know which skilled trade they want to get into to get a headstart on their career. And for those who are even younger, there are skilled trade camps that take place over the summer months which allow students in junior high to test out different trades and see if they're a good fit. The availability of these camps varies across the country, but with a little digging you should be able to find something close by.

Watch a Skills Canada competition

Skills Canada is a non-profit organization that organizes competitions across the country where skilled tradespeople can showcase their talents. They put on provincial competitions every year, with the winners qualifying for the national championship.

One of the best things about these Skills Canada competitions is that most of the qualifiers usually put up a booth with hands-on activities for spectators to try out. Open to the public, these events are great for those who are unsure of what trade they want to get into as it helps them get a much better understanding of the different ones out there, and allows them to see the best those in the trade have to offer.

As we mentioned before, it can be tough picking the right trade for your career if you don't have any prior experience with them. That's why it's important to expose yourself to as many as possible before you make a decision, and the above events or camps will allow you to do just that.
