3 Ways You Can Be A More Productive Worker

Overview

Time isn't everything and this is certainly true when it comes to work. While being able to put the extra hours is always appreciated, it is the end result that matters and becoming a more efficient worker will quickly gain you respect and opportunities. Here are three ways you can become a more productive worker:

Get More Sleep

This one may seem obvious or even silly, but it's actually one of the most decisive factors on whether or not you have a productive day. Without the right amount of sleep your attention to detail, skill and coordination can all suffer, and your ability to use your memory can also be affected. This isn't just unfounded advice either – there's science to back it up. Most research shows that healthy adults need around 7-8 hours of sleep every night, and the renowned Mayo clinic has conducted research that shows adults who get less than 7 hours sleep exhibit reduced mental abilities when compared to those that have had a full night's sleep. If you only get around 4 or 5 hours of sleep per night then you run the risk of serious neurological and psychological conditions. To be at your best when working it is crucial that you get the recommended amount of sleep.

Lower Your Stress Levels

The negative effects of stress on your health have been well-documented and trying to lower your stress levels is essential if you want to maximize your performance at work. It can be helpful to try and work out exactly what's making you stressed in the first place. At first it may seem that everything is just one big cause for worry, but when broken down you can see what the main root of it is. This may be your job, your finances, or even something in your personal life. Once you've identified that cause you can start to deal with it and potentially even eliminate it. For example, if you've decided that money is making you worry then you can focus on relaxing during times when money is not involved and you can work out a long term plan to make your situation better. If you want to shine in the workplace then it is crucial that you are as mentally healthy as possible, and this includes reducing your stress levels.

Exercise Your Brain

Thanks to the ever-advancing technologies of today, we are spending more and more time in front of screens, devices and consoles, and this can allow your cognitive abilities to get out of shape. To stay sharp it is important that you exercise your brain in a variety of ways, such as by interacting with others, experiencing new places, and by breaking routines. There's nothing wrong with enjoying your smartphone or tablet in moderation, but enjoying a variety of different activities you can keep your cognitive abilities on their toes and ensure your brain stays as sharp as possible.

Bottom Line

The days of only putting in long working weeks and extra hours to gain respect are gone and an increasing number of supervisors and managers are realizing the importance of efficient staff. If you want to gain respect and extra opportunities then trying to become a more efficient worker is a great way to start. In this blog we've covered a few ways you can be your best, but there are many more out there to discover.

Do you think you're an efficient worker? If so, what helps you stay at the top of your game?
