Back when I was starting out as a young professional, I used to really stress myself out trying to be perfect in everything I did. I had this ideal image in my mind of how my work should be, and it felt like I was always striving to meet that expectation. This led me to lack confidence in my work as I always felt like it wasn't meeting my expectations for myself. But as time went on and I gained more experience, I realized that my lack of confidence was due to my fear of failing and being told that I wasn't good enough at my job. It took me some time and practice, but I eventually learned how to build up my confidence and tap into my skills.

My struggles with insecurity at work are not unique, as many individuals face similar challenges despite their valuable contributions.

Confidence can be undermined by the pursuit of perfection, self-doubt, the fear of failure, and even underestimating one's own intelligence.

It is essential to understand that low confidence is not an inherent flaw and does not have to define an individual. Confidence can be learned and cultivated through self-awareness, changing one's mindset, and bringing one's full self to the workplace or any other setting.

Tips to Build Confidence at Work

Some tips that have helped me over the years:
  1. Get out of your comfort zone. Take small steps outside of your comfort zone to get you comfortable with being uncomfortable. Take on new challenges or projects that will challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone.
  2. Try doing things that you think/feel you can't do. Don't be afraid to take risks and make mistakes, as these experiences can help you learn and grow. Remember that your mindset plays a big role in your success, so try to shift your thinking from "I can't do this" to "I can learn and improve." With practice and perseverance, you may surprise yourself with what you're capable of.
  3. Practice self-care and prioritize your mental and physical health to help you feel more energized and confident. Make sure to take breaks throughout the day and step away from your work when needed to recharge your mind and prevent burnout. Incorporate activities that bring you joy and help you relax. Prioritize getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying hydrated to fuel your body and mind. Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish, but rather essential for your overall well-being and success in both your personal and professional life.
  4. Begin to develop a rapport with your coworkers to build your confidence in interacting with them and being in their presence. Build relationships with your colleagues by engaging in regular conversations and finding common interests. This can help you feel more at ease when interacting with them and build a sense of camaraderie within the workplace. As you become more comfortable around your coworkers, you may find it easier to contribute your ideas during meetings and collaborate on projects. Remember that building strong relationships with your colleagues is not only beneficial for your own professional development but also for the overall success of your team and organization.
  5. Contribute your ideas during meetings. During meetings, make a point to speak up and share at least one idea, even if it's small. This can really help you overcome the fear of speaking out and the fear of failing. Remember, every contribution counts, no matter how big or small. So don't be afraid to join in on the conversation and share your thoughts.
  6. Try, try, and try again. You know, change takes time and it doesn't happen overnight. So, don't beat yourself up if you're not seeing results right away. Just start practicing the techniques I shared with you in small ways. For instance, set some specific goals like sharing your thoughts or asking questions during meetings. And try to turn your inner critic into your biggest cheerleader. Believe me, it makes a huge difference. And, surround yourself with positive coworkers and mentors who support your professional development.

Slowly but surely, step outside your comfort zone and watch yourself grow more and more confident. Because let's be real, confidence at work is super important not only for career advancement but also for feeling happy and satisfied. So, challenge yourself, trust your abilities, and everything else will follow.
