Skills Canada National Competition 2014

A few weeks ago was the 20th anniversary of the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC). The event is the only national multi-trade and technology competition for apprentices and students in Canada. Over 500 young people across all regions of Canada travelled to Toronto to participate in the event, where over 40 skilled trade and technology contests were held.

The goal of SCNC is to create a forum where young Canadians can get hands-on work experience related to skilled trades and technology careers at a national level. Some sectors highlighted at the event included transportation, employability, manufacturing and construction.

SCNC 2014 also included an Essential Skills Stage where partners of the event delivered presentations about the essential skills and how mastering these skills can be a key element to success.  There are 9 essential skills that have been acknowledged and promoted by the Government of Canada and other international agencies. The skills have been identified as being essential for work, learning, life and providing the foundation for the learning of all other skills. At Matrix Labour Leasing we also recognize and promote these skills as being valuable to the work and life of our employees and partners. These 9 skills are: numeracy, oral communication, working with others, continuous learning, reading text, writing, thinking, document use and digital.

Congratulations to all of the contestants and winners of SCNC 2014! We hope the event was a valuable experience for all attendees, and especially for those young Canadians who will make up the future skilled trades and technology workforce.
